CCTV camera set up in buses

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs in collaboration with Dipto Foundation inaugurated an innovative programme dedicated to women’s safety on the public transports at Syed Nazrul Islam Convention Centre at Mirpur on Sunday 16th October 2022.

The state minister for Women and Children Affairs, Fazilatun Nssa Indira, was the Chief Guest while MD Hassanuzzaman Kallol, Secretary of the ministry chaired the occasion.

The programme was attended by the high officials from different ministries . Local politicians, bus owners, bus drivers, buss-staff, helpers, passengers, and members of the civil societies were present among others.

The state minister stated that the innovative project would help to protect the women from any awkward incidents meant to women while commuting in Dhaka city. She was highly optimistic about the success of the project and hoped it would encourage all involved in this service. As a result, the minister believed, the public transports would be women friendly and safer.

Further the Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Md Hassanuzzaman Kallol, said the project would provide the all-important safety for the women while comminuting in public transport.

A monitoring cell is established to monitor the in real time through CCTV cameras. As it is a pilot project the Secretary strongly believe that it will be a project which will be expanded all over the country in course of time. This unique project will bring the results of the pilot phase in one umbrella of the system. Two separate studies reflected that harassment and abuse on women in the busses is decreased in 2022 compared with 2018. This progress has been possible due to the intense surveillance of the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs. But we have long to go. The goal of the Ministry of Women and Children is to bring it to zero level. And to achieve the goal, we have set up 100 CCTV cameras in 100 buses in the inauguration ceremony’ he added.

DIPTO Foundation has been working for safe, secure, and equal space for women in the society for more than a decade and is now working to implement the innovative project. A highly skilled technical team under the constant supervision of DIPTO Foundation is working day and night to bring off the maximum result. The Foundation will submit a statement to the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs . Day to Day monitoring report will be submitted to the Ministry for smooth monitoring of the project.

The Executive Director of Dipto Foundation, Zakia K Hassan, gave the inaugural speech followed by an audio-visual demonstration of the program.
